Defining the Value Proposition for Membership of Professional Associations

17/06/2010 - 5:30pm
17/06/2010 - 8:00pm
Venue:
VECCI 486 Albert St East Melbourne, Level 1, Room 1.6

This event has been cancelled

Outline of the program:

  • Ever been tempted to join a new Membership Association, group or Networking Event, but been concerned if it’s the right one for you?
  • Have you ever wondered why people join so many Associations and if they are benefiting from them?

Join a variety of panelists to discuss, explore and define how to glean the best value from your CDAA (and other professional) membership. The cost for a business or individual of a member association can be seen as either a luxury or a crucial part of your business positioning.

The value proposition for a CDAA member in private practice is therefore one that must be considered. This session is targeted to those who may be wondering if they should join other bodies or who are pondering how to derive the best from their current professional memberships. It will also be useful for those working in career development who are considering a move into private practice.

The cross section of panelists have been selected because of their diverse memberships of other organisations that many Association members are members of or have considered joining and include: AIM, AHRI, AITD, CDAA, NSAA and VECCI.

  • Hear how using a combination of experience, discussion and activity this session will define value propositions,
  • You will discuss how value is perceived and gained from professional associations and
  • Participants will be engaged in exploring the value proposition as it stands.
  • Participants will be able to understand how networking and access to professional development will underpin the value of their business

PANEL OF PRESENTERS:

The panel members will be discussing their own experiences of membership of organisations and include:

AIM: Australian Institute of Management: PRESENTER APOLOGY
The consultant negotiated to deliver this part of the discussion has had to withdraw due to a workload clash. Several of the panel members are also members of AIM and will jointly cover off discussion of the value this membership connection.

AITD: Australian Institute of Training & Development: Pam Macdonald
Pam is a Member of AITD as well as a Professional Member of the CDAA (amongst others) and has almost 25 years experience in a range of industries and environments. A firm believer in and supporter or professional development – hence her role as Victorian PD coordinator – Pam will discuss her views on the changing value of professional memberships and how to get the most out of memberships you hold. As a private practitioner with several strings to her business bow in Broadspring Consulting, Pam is well aware of the need for every expense to have a positive pay off.

VECCI: Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce & Industry: Membership Manager
VECCI is well known as the largest employer organisation in Victoria and for its long-term sponsorship of the CDAA. The key role is to represent employer and industry views on public policy issues to Government and also provide traditional services to employers on IR, OHS, WorkCover and other regulatory requirements. But VECCI is much more in terms of delivery of short courses and qualifications as well as the delivery of briefings and events to its members, customers and clients. You don’t have to be a member to access service, but VECCI has also recognized in its service model the need to accommodate the needs of small and micro business. It also has many partnerships to deliver its Corporate social responsibility initiatives, as well as deliver a range of Government contracts. It can be an ideal way for employers to network and also obtain the expert advice it needs.

AHRI & NSAA: Australian Human Resources Institute & National Speakers Association of Australia: Helena Steel
Helena is a Fellow of AHRI, and was President for Victoria in 2004 and 2005. She is the current VP for the NSAA Vic Chapter, and a Professional Member. As expected she is a Professional member of CDAA. As a Director of Careerguru.com.au she is very active with networking and speaking groups. She will share with us her unique “Dashboard Spreadsheet” that she completes with her business plan every year on Membership Associations, and Membership/Networking groups. She plots out their cost, time requirement, commitment, and benefits. She also checks that they are aligned with her target area, and goals for the year. This she feels has saved her thousands in time and money each year.

CDAA: Career Development Association Australia Andrew Rimington,
Members know Andrew through his policy role at VECCI and work as CDAA President. Andrew previously worked in private practice and was a member of several professional organisations and will explain how as a sole business practitioner he won a national service contract in the career transition field. The contract was won based on the networks developed across Australia through a variety of professional memberships.
