With the release of Year 12 results, students are advised to think broadly about their career and course options.

“While there will be great excitement for some students who receive the marks they are hoping for, there are others who will be disappointed and want to change their preferences for university courses. Likewise, students who receive a higher entry score than expected can consider other course options that they would not have otherwise considered. Either way, there is an abundance of path ways to choose from”, said Carole Brown, National President of the Career Development Association of Australia.

Students leaving school are encouraged to think broadly about their course and career options.  Thinking about career options and preferences as a first step informs good choices about further study.

“Getting the score to enter a highly sought after course may be very satisfying, but unless the course is aligned with a student’s career interests, it may not be the best choice”, said Ms Brown.

“Australia is blessed with an abundance of education and training options and pathways. As well as university, students have access to TAFE, private training providers, apprenticeships and traineeships. There are many more ways to get to a career destination than ever before.”

In addition, the gap year provides an opportunity for young people to try out different kinds of work and extend their experience at home as well as overseas.

Students are encouraged to consult resources like MyFuture (www.myfuture.edu.au) or the Job Guide (www.jobguide.deewr.gov.au) to assist with career planning and course choice and to enlist the services of a qualified career professional for advice and guidance.
